Sloane & Mitch's Wedding in the Canadian Rockies

I traveled to Canada in early August for Sloane Hunter and Mitch Wegmann's wedding in Canmore, in the Canadian Rockies.  I hadn't seen Sloane, a close friend from my European backpacking travels in '99, in around eight years since I visited her in chilly Alberta over Christmas 2000.  I'd never met Mitch either, so I was really excited to be there for their big day.

I arrived into Calgary late on Thursday night after a delayed flight, and once I'd unearthed my lost baggage and waited for the rental car it was past midnight.  After an uneventful 1.5 hour drive west into the mountains I eventually found my hotel and collapsed into bed around 2am.  Even though I was exhasted I woke up at 7am on Friday as I wanted to get out and enjoy my "free" day in the mountains.  I originally planned a strenuous day hike, but a quick glance out the window at the unsettled weather made my change my plans.  I switched gears from a hike to a mini road trip.

I drove north past Banff and continued along Highway 1 to Lake Louise.  By the time I got there it was raining heavily, and without even being able to see across the lake to the mountains and glaciers beyond I instead settled down over a cup of tea in the hotel.  With the weather not looking to lift, I changed my focus and tracked down a couple of waterfalls (a guaranteed winner on a wet and rainy day) in some side valleys near the town of Field.

With the hint of finer weather to the north, I wrapped up the day by driving up part of the Icefields Parkway - a world-class highway drive up the Continental Divide between Banff and Jasper with views of turquoise lakes, green forests, towering mountains and numerous glaciers.  While I didn't have time to drive the whole length of the road, I was able to hit up some of its highlights.  Even better, the sun did indeed come out, and I was able to enjoy some incredible vistas.

On the morning of the wedding I decided to hike nearby 2450m Ha Ling Peak.  This mountain holds special significance to Sloane's family, as her brother Chris died rock climbing on its steep face in 1999 as Sloane was returning from Europe.  I'd heard so much about Chris but never had the chance to meet him, so it meant a lot for me to climb the peak.  I woke up at 7am and drove to the base of the mountain; it was a cool, crisp morning, but sunny with some clouds - perfect hiking weather.  I hoofed up the steep forested slope, and after a scramble across some scree above the treeline near the summit I reached the peak in a little less than two hours.  I found I'd beaten the crowds and had the whole mountain to myself.  I had a quick breakfast at the summit enjoying the expansive views, shot off a quick text message to Sloane, and then raced back down to the car to get back to the hotel and get ready for the wedding.

The wedding itself was lovely, set in Riverside Park by the river, with an incredible backdrop of towering mountain summits (including Ha Ling Peak).  The service included a mix of First Nation and Celtic traditions, which suited the location perfectly.  After the wedding, and following some early evening cocktails back at the hotel, the reception was held in one of the hotel ballrooms where we partied until well after midnight.

Who ever thought a chance encounter in a Salzburg hostel would lead to this nine years later!  Stephanie, Andrea, myself and Sloane at the reception.  It was fantastic to catch up with the girls again after so long.

Christmas in Whistler with the Marshes

While I had to work Christmas week, I was still able to escape up to Whistler over the four day long weekend.  Tara, a good friend of mine from Bain (now en route to France to start her MBA at INSEAD) was up there with her family, and she suggested I come up and join her for a couple of days skiing.  It was great to get away, even just for a couple of days, lovely to meet Tara's family, and we were even blessed with fresh snowfalls every night.  The snow was fantastic and I skied one day on Whistler and one on Blackcomb (I think I'm more of a Blackcomb fan - the terrain is more varied).  And hey the apres-ski wasn't too bad either!!  It sure beats anything that Lake Tahoe has to offer!

New Consultant Training in Montreal

One of the great perks of working at Bain are its global training sessions, where trainees and trainers come together from all across the Bain network.  The first of these is New Consultant Training (NCT) which is usually held in Miami, but this session was held in Montreal for the first time.

It was a great but busy week.  My team ("Lucky Seven") was a diverse mix of nationalities (Australia, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium) and backgrounds (new Consultants, promoted Associate Consultants, even a Manager that had just joined Bain from another firm).  We had a lot of fun together and worked pretty well as a team, finishing solidly in the top five.  The days were typically quite busy with lessons and exercises, but in typical Bain style we went out late every night.  Montreal was an awesome location in that regard with a great nightlife - restaurants, bars, clubs etc.

A few trips to BC

With my apartment hunting out of the way a lot sooner than I planned, I was able to get up to Victoria to visit my friend Caroline, who I've known since the early days in Switzerland when she was over there as an au pair.  Together we drove north all the way up and over the island to Tofino.

During one of my early weeks traveling to Austin for work, rather than flying back to SF over the weekend I flew up to Vancouver instead.  I met up with Caroline there and we started a mini road trip through the Rockies.  The first day we drove to Hope, a tiny town surrounded by the mountains whose claim to fame is (was?) that Rambo was filmed there.  The next day we drove further east to Okanagan Valley, a warm, dry microclimate that is Canada's wine region (who ever knew?!).  We had a great couple of nights there tasting wines and eating good food.

A Cold Christmas in Canada

(Note: I get a lot of shit from my Canadian friends - you know who you are! - about the lack of detail or photos on my Canadian page.  All my photos from the trip are on film and presently boxed up in storage in Melbourne.  You'll just have to wait until I get them out of storage and scanned in!)

For the Christmas of 2000 I flew to Canada to catch up with a bunch of friends I'd made in Europe in 1999.

My first stop was Edmonton to catch up with Sloane and Steph.  I couldn't believe how cold it was in there, even with the sun out during the day it was a freeeezing minus 30 degrees Celcius!  It even hurt to breathe - honestly!  I spent a few days hanging out with Sloane seeing the sights of Edmonton, including the West Edmonton Mall (largest in the world!) and also had a skiing lesson.  We then headed into the Rockies for a few days around Jasper, which I really enjoyed, especially the snowboarding at Sunshine.  Small world story: we drove into the mountains to stay at a youth hostel way up there in the middle of nowhere, and completely out of the blue bumped into James Bellett, and Aussie guy I met in Turkey in April 1999.

We returned to Edmonton for Christmas with Sloane's parents.  Sloane also took me to my first ever ice hockey match - Edmonton Oilers vs. Montreal Canadiens - and we had some wicked seats.  We then drove down through Calgary and into the Rockies again, this time to Canmore, Banff and the sights around there.

I left Edmonton and flew to Vancouver to catch up with Kerri Gamble, another friend from my travels around Europe.  I had a couple of days to see Vancouver, and Kerri took me to see a local band play (Matthew Good Band, very cool!).  We then drove up to Whistler along the beautiful coastal highway and we had a few days snowboarding on Blackcomb and partying the nights away in the village.  Heaps of fun!
